How a Silk Saree Is Made — From Yarn to Drape
Where Silk Begins
A silk saree begins long before it reaches her hands.
Before the drape, before the pallu falls into place, before the light catches the zari — there are weeks, sometimes months, of patient human work. A silkworm spinning in the hush of a mulberry grove. A reeler drawing a single unbroken thread from a cocoon no larger than an egg. A weaver at the loom in the first light of morning, laying down thread after thread by hand. A silk saree is not manufactured. It is grown, spun, dyed, and woven into being — slowly, deliberately, with an artistry the modern world rarely asks of anyone.

This is that story, told in full — from the first thread of yarn to the final drape.
Stage 1 — Sericulture: Cultivating the Silk
It begins not in a loom room, but in a mulberry field.
Silk is produced by the larvae of the Bombyx mori silkworm, one of nature's most remarkable creatures. Cultivating it is called sericulture — at once an agricultural practice and an art form refined over thousands of years.
Mulberry cultivation. The silkworm feeds on one thing alone: the leaves of the mulberry tree. Before a single thread of silk exists, mulberry must be grown, tended, and harvested. Leaf quality shapes silk quality — healthier leaves yield stronger, finer, more lustrous fibre. India's great silk states — Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Assam — each bring their own mulberry traditions, and with them the regional character of their silks.
Rearing the silkworms. Eggs are hatched in carefully controlled conditions, with temperature, humidity, and ventilation all closely managed. The larvae emerge as tiny caterpillars and feed on fresh mulberry leaves for four to five weeks, growing quickly and shedding their skin four times as they develop.
The cocoon. Ready to pupate, the silkworm begins to spin. From two glands in its body it secretes a continuous thread as a fine liquid that hardens the instant it meets the air, wrapping itself in a figure-of-eight motion for two to three days until it is entirely enclosed. A single cocoon holds between 300 and 900 metres of unbroken filament — one of the quiet marvels of the natural world. No larger than a small egg, it carries nearly a kilometre of thread within its walls.
Harvesting the cocoons. Once complete, the cocoons are gathered before the moth can emerge and break the continuous thread. They are sorted with care — the damaged and the diseased set apart from the healthy — because only the finest cocoons yield the finest silk.
Stage 2 — Reeling: Unwinding the Thread
Harvested, the cocoons must be processed quickly to keep the silk filament intact. This is reeling — drawing the continuous thread off the cocoon.
Softening the cocoons. The cocoons are submerged in hot water, between 90 and 95 degrees Celsius. This softens the sericin — the natural gum that binds the cocoon together and holds the filament in place. Without it, the thread cannot be unwound without breaking.
Finding the thread's end. A skilled reeler brushes the softened cocoon with a small brush or bundle of twigs to locate the loose end of the filament. Finding it is a craft in itself: the thread is extraordinarily fine, almost invisible, and must be lifted free without tangling or breaking.
Reeling the filament. Once found, the filament is drawn from the cocoon and guided onto a reel. A single filament is too fine to weave alone, so threads from several cocoons — usually five to eight — are reeled together, their natural sericin binding them gently into one stronger thread as they dry. This is raw, or reeled, silk. The speed of reeling, the number of filaments combined, and the tension held throughout all shape the quality of the final thread. An experienced reeler can hold a consistent thread for hours — a skill that takes years to earn.
Stage 3 — Twisting and Throwing: Strengthening the Yarn
Raw silk off the reel is strong, but not yet ready for the loom. It must be twisted — a process called throwing — to give it the strength, elasticity, and texture that different weaves require.
Twisting the yarn. The raw threads are twisted to varying degrees depending on their purpose. Threads destined for the warp — the vertical threads running the length of the saree — take more twist, for strength and resistance to tension. Threads for the weft — woven horizontally across the warp — are twisted more loosely, for softness and drape. Each variety asks for its own degree of twist: the silk in a Kanchipuram is twisted and prepared quite differently from the silk in a soft Mysore, which is exactly why the two feel so distinct in body and texture.
Degumming. At some point in processing — before or after throwing, depending on the tradition — the silk is degummed: boiled in a mild alkaline solution to remove the sericin from the raw fibre. Degumming reveals the true lustre beneath — the brilliant, multi-dimensional sheen that makes pure silk so extraordinary to look at — and softens the fabric into the suppleness and drape of finished silk.
Stage 4 — Dyeing: Giving the Saree Its Soul
Before the silk reaches the loom, the yarn is dyed. This is among the most skilled and consequential stages of all — the colours chosen, and the care with which they are set, decide how the saree looks and how beautifully it endures.
Preparing the yarn. The yarn is washed thoroughly to clear any remaining impurities, then treated with a mordant — a compound that helps the dye bond permanently to the fibre. The mordant shapes not only how well the colour holds, but its exact shade and depth.
Natural and chemical dyes. Indian silk was traditionally coloured with natural dyes drawn from plants, minerals, and insects — indigo for blue, madder root for red, pomegranate rind for yellow, iron for black — each one ageing beautifully, with a depth and subtlety all its own. Many weavers, particularly those working in Kalamkari, Chanderi, and certain handloom varieties, still use natural dyes today. Modern sarees are more often dyed with chemical dyes, which bring a far wider range of colour, greater consistency, and often better light-fastness. In skilled hands, they produce the saturated jewel tones, rich pastels, and vivid festive shades that define silk today.
Yarn dyeing and fabric dyeing. In most handloom sarees, the yarn is dyed before weaving — skein dyeing — so the colour penetrates each thread completely before it ever meets the loom. The result has a depth and intensity that piece-dyeing, done after weaving, cannot fully match. In ikat sarees — Pochampally, Sambalpuri, Patola — the yarn is dyed in precise pattern before weaving, using a resist technique. When the pre-dyed threads come together on the loom, the design emerges almost as if by magic — work of remarkable complexity, demanding that the weaver plan every thread's placement before the first pass is made.
Stage 5 — Warping: Setting Up the Loom
With the yarn dyed and prepared, the loom must be set — a process called warping, as precise and demanding as the weaving to come.
Calculating the warp. The warp is the set of vertical threads running the full length of the saree. For a standard silk saree of around five and a half metres, these threads are measured and set to length; longer sarees, or those with elaborate borders, are calculated accordingly. The number of warp threads sets the thread count of the finished cloth — more threads to the centimetre, a finer and denser weave. A silk saree may carry anywhere between 60 and 120 warp threads per centimetre, depending on variety and quality.
Threading the loom. Each warp thread is passed through the heddles — the small wire or string loops that raise and lower threads during weaving — and then through the reed, the comb-like device that keeps the warp evenly spaced and beats each weft thread into place. For an intricate border, threads may each need a different heddle combination to carry the pattern. Threading a complex loom can take a full day or more, and a single error in the sequence will run the length of the entire saree.
Tensioning the warp. Threaded, the warp is tensioned evenly across the loom's full width. Even tension is everything — unevenness shows in the weave, in both the look and the drape of the finished saree.
Stage 6 — Weaving: Where the Saree Comes to Life
Weaving is the heart of it all — where preparation, skill, and craft converge into something extraordinary.
The loom. Traditional Indian silk sarees are woven on handlooms — the pit loom, where the weaver sits with feet in a pit below to work the pedals, or the frame loom, raised above ground. Both are worked entirely by hand and foot, in a rhythmic, coordinated motion that grows deeply physical over hours at the loom. Power looms handle commercial production of lower and mid-range sarees, but the truly fine handloom names — Kanchipuram, Banarasi, Paithani, Jamdani, Patola — are woven by hand alone. The difference shows at once, in quality, consistency, and character.
The basic weave. At its simplest, weaving passes the weft thread — carried in a shuttle — horizontally through the warp. The heddles rise and fall in turn to open a shed, a gap between two sets of warp threads, for the shuttle to pass through; the reed then beats the weft firmly against the row before. Raise, pass, beat. Lower, pass, beat. The motion repeats thousands of times for every centimetre of cloth. A skilled weaver completes around 15 to 20 centimetres of plain silk in an hour — so a simple five-and-a-half-metre saree means at least 25 to 35 hours of continuous weaving for the body alone, before the border and pallu.
Weaving the border. The border is usually more intricate than the body, carrying woven motifs, zari, or coloured-thread designs that demand finer control of individual threads. On sarees like Kanchipuram, border and body are woven as separate sections and later interlocked at the edges — a technique called korvai, which takes exceptional skill and gives the authentic Kanchipuram its signature contrast border.
Weaving the pallu. The pallu — the decorative end draped over the shoulder — is the most complex section of all, holding the densest zari, the most elaborate motifs, the finest patterns of the entire saree. On a richly worked pallu, a weaver may complete no more than three to five centimetres in a full day.
Zari weaving. Where a saree carries zari — the gold and silver thread of Kanchipuram, Banarasi, Paithani, and many others — the zari is woven alongside the silk weft on additional shuttles, each placement decided by hand as the weaving moves forward. On a richly worked saree, the weaver may manage three, four, or more shuttles at once, each carrying a different thread.
Jacquard weaving. Many sarees, contemporary and traditional alike, use a Jacquard attachment — a mechanical device that lifts individual warp threads to a pre-set pattern, once punched onto cards, now often programmed digitally. It lets complex, repeating motifs be woven more efficiently than by hand alone, while still being executed on a handloom by a skilled weaver. The finest Banarasi sarees often pair Jacquard pattern control with hand-worked zari for the most intricate designs of all.
Stage 7 — Finishing: Preparing the Saree for the World
Off the loom, the saree moves through a sequence of finishing steps that ready it for wearing.
Inspection. Every handwoven saree is examined closely once it leaves the loom. The weaver, or a dedicated inspector, reads every centimetre for weaving errors, broken threads, uneven tension, or inconsistencies in colour. Small imperfections are corrected by hand — a single misplaced thread carefully reworked — while sarees with serious flaws are set aside.
Washing. The saree is washed to lift any oils, sizing, or residue left from weaving. Silk asks for gentleness — lukewarm water and a mild agent — to protect both fibre and dye. Washed, it is stretched back to its true dimensions and dried in the shade, away from any light that might fade the colour.
Ironing and pressing. A controlled press smooths the cloth and lifts its natural sheen. Silk is pressed cooler than most fabrics, often with a damp cloth between iron and surface to guard the fibre. This final press brings out the full lustre and gives the saree the crisp, polished look it carries when first unfolded.
Additional embellishment. Some sarees gather further detail after weaving — hand embroidery, sequin work, mirror work, stone setting, or extra zari, each applied by specialist artisans. This can add days, even weeks, to the making of a richly decorated saree.
The blouse piece. Most sarees include a matching blouse piece — usually 80 centimetres to a metre of the same fabric, cut from the start of the saree before finishing — to be stitched into the blouse that completes the ensemble.
Stage 8 — From the Weaver to You
The finished saree travels from the weaver's workshop to you through a chain of relationships built on trust, expertise, and a shared devotion to quality.
